KIPP Texas is part of the national KIPP network of 255 college-preparatory public charter schools educating early childhood, elementary, middle, and high school students. KIPP schools are part of the free public school system and enrollment is open to all students. Nationwide, KIPP students complete four-year college at a rate of 36 percent, comparable to the national average for all students and approximately three times higher than the average of students from low-income families.

The Opportunity

The Senior Director of Facilities will plan, develop, and oversee the administration of all of KIPP Texas's plant facilities, custodial services, grounds, renovations and capital maintenance activities, security, and the various contracted services needed to have excellent facilities.   They will plan and coordinate these activities with an eye toward identifying and improving efficiencies which will maximize financial outcomes for KIPP.   The Senior Director of Facilities will have oversight of annual operating budgets of almost $20 million and a capital budget of over $6 million.   Additionally, the Senior Director of Facilities will have a team of over 120 direct and indirect reports.   This position reports directly to the Managing Director of Procurement, Facilities, and Construction.

Key Responsibilities

The Senior Director of Facilities will:

Oversee and improve upon the cleaning and maintenance of all current campuses to internal service levels

  • Monitor and support Regional Facilities Managers on day-to-day operational services while driving standardization and efficiency across the state

  • Oversee the creation, training, implementation, and continuous improvement of standard processes and systems aimed at improving the statewide team’s performance on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Build and cultivate a data-based and continuous improvement culture across the facilities teams by conducting regular assessments of our facilities and providing precise and effective feedback  

  • Oversee the facilities operating budget and own the development of the annual budget for the department

  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with Managing Directors of Operations across regions to enlist assistance from school operations and ensure each facility meets school operations’ needs

Develop and execute upon the statewide facilities plans including growth

  • Lead annual planning and goal setting activities for the Facilities team and participate in those activities for the larger Operations department.

  • Participate in efforts to acquire new real estate to support growth plans

  • Work closely with the startup teams for each new location to ensure campuses are launched effectively

  • Serves as liaison between KIPP Texas statewide construction and design teams, regional stakeholders and other consultants in the design and renovation of properties within the regions

  • Oversee the identification, budget identification, prioritization, and execution of capital maintenance and improvement projects with support from the statewide Construction group

  • Manage the execution of the statewide quality control program and audits of facilities related services

Managing People

  • Champion diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) within the department and KIPP

  • Responsible for overall team management, performance reviews, and staff development for the Facilities Department

  • Create career development plans for direct reports to ensure personal and professional growth of the Facilities Department 

  • Build relationships and lead by example

  • Establish a data-driven culture that tackles challenging problems and verifies the results with measurable data

  • Take on additional roles and responsibilities as assigned 

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Minimum of seven  years of facilities / maintenance experience, with at least 5 years as a manager with budget ownership

  • Ability to lead, manage, and support a large, diverse team

  • Experience in education and /or real estate preferred

  • English fluency is required; Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an energetic attitude; ability to work with all levels of the organization

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; Keen ability to use data in the decision-making process

  • Exceptional project management skills, with an ability to juggle multiple priorities simultaneously 

  • Experience developing, implementing, and refining systems, processes, and/or protocols

  • Meticulous attention to detail with an ability to produce high-quality work in a dynamic environment

  • Ability to work under pressure and remain calm in the midst of many changing circumstances

  • Flexible and entrepreneurial spirit; ability to adapt to the quickly changing needs of KIPP

  • Demonstrated interest in continuous improvement

  • High proficiency in Google Applications and Microsoft Suite

  • Reliable transportation required (may be required to drive to different facilities or to pick up supplies during the workday)

Compensation and Benefits

Salary is based on years of experience, degree of education, and level of expertise. A competitive benefits package is also offered.
