About KIPP NYC
KIPP NYC Public Schools is a non-profit network of free, public charter schools that prepares students for success in college and life. In 1995 we started our first middle school, KIPP Academy, in The Bronx.  Our goal was to graduate students with the strength of character and academic abilities needed to succeed in high school, college and beyond – and in so doing, to prove what is possible for all students.  Today, our New York City network is comprised of seven elementary schools, seven middle schools, one high school, and KIPP Through College, a comprehensive support program for our alumni. KIPP NYC Public Schools currently serves more than 6000 students and alumni and has a staff of more than 700. In August 2019, we opened a new elementary and middle school in the Bronx, and in August 2020, we will be opening KIPP’s first intentionally racially and socioeconomically integrated school, KIPP Beyond Middle School!  

Position Overview
The Director of Middle School Math is an essential position that drives middle school Math achievement at KIPP NYC. The Director of Middle School Math will report to the Managing Director of Academics and work to design and implement high priority math initiatives across KIPP NYC. High priority math initiatives will be determined in collaboration with the Managing Director of Academics, Managing Director of Schools, and the Teaching and Learning Support (TLS) team. The Director of Middle School Math will also be expected to observe classrooms and provide feedback to teachers and leaders on implementation of high priority math initiatives across KIPP NYC.


General Duties and Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

Curriculum Design and Management
  • Support and execute middle school math initiatives at KIPP NYC based on student and teacher practice data to ensure that math instruction aspires to the vision of excellent math instruction across KIPP NYC
  • Draw on content knowledge and understanding of effective math instructional practices to design and revise curriculum documents and continually evaluate curriculum implementation
  • Based on high priority curricular design needs, design and manage major curriculum changes that will improve quality of instruction and user experience of the KIPP NYC math curriculum

 Assessment Design and Data Systems
  • Develop and design a cohesive summative and formative assessment strategy that accurately measures key knowledge and skills across a K-8 math progression
  • Collaborate with the Data and Assessment Team to create and manage a system for sharing assessment data results and analyses to the greater KIPP NYC teacher and leader community
  • Create and manage system for sharing assessment data results and data trends with the KIPP NYC teacher and leader community

School Support
  • Observe instructional practices in schools with a specific lens towards high priority and/or new MS math initiatives to evaluate changes and determine next steps for teacher and leader support
  • Support school-based leaders in continually evaluating the effectiveness of the math program overall based on our existing data systems

Professional Development
  • Provide targeted coaching and professional development experiences to principals and deans to support content knowledge development and curriculum implementation and innovation
  • Develop and facilitate regional professional development for teachers and leaders to ensure full implementation of curriculum and instructional initiatives in KIPP NYC’s math program

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in education and/or Math education preferred
  • Minimum 4 years exemplary math teaching experience with strong student achievement results
  • Minimum 3 years exemplary teacher coaching and adult management experience
  • Deep knowledge of middle school math content and learning theory, Common Core standards, current educational trends, blended learning practices, methods, research, and technology, and program planning and implementation
  • Experience planning and leading engaging and effective professional development for adults
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop productive working relationships with multiple stakeholders across the organization
  • Meticulous attention to detail with an ability to produce high quality work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
